Medical Education

 

Medical Education at Glance

To anticipate the development of medical science and technology globally, and to answer greater demand of the world health aspect, University of Muhammadiyah Malang establishes medical education which focuses on advanced medical knowledge based on Islamic and society values. This educational orientation will provide direction and shed light for medical education including the academic activities and the development of the necessary resources.

 

a. Science and Medical Technology Orientation
The medical faculty always up-grades the development of science and medical technology. It can be seen through the medical faculty curriculum in which the learning experiences will equip and allow students to follow and master the development of science and medical technology and medical industries.

 

b. Community Orientation
The medical education also focuses on the demands of community needs. Therefore, the medical curriculum is derived and directed to the demands of community development.

 

Medical Education Concept and Framework

Medical education curriculum is designed based on a solid conceptual framework, as described below:

  1. Mastery of Science and Technology
    Science and technology mastery is the main foundation in carrying out medical care services to the community. Therefore the curriculum contents and learning experiences are organized and implemented in such a way that allow  students to understand and master the science and medical technology accordance with educational goals.

 

The medical education subjects at UMM is designed to cover some crucial knowledge such as: basic science of medical, biomedical science, community medical science, public health science and clinical medical.

 

  1. Resolving Problems scientifically.
    T
    he ability to solve problem scientifically at medical field is strongly necessary for students and graduates to possess. Problem solving procedures begins with medical review and medical diagnosis, drafting medical interference, performing medical actions comply with Islamic medical ethics, evaluating and determining follow-up action. This ability is developed through different forms of learning experiences such as developing critical thinking skills, scientific reasoning, alternative thinking and ability in making clinical decision accurately.

 

  1. Attitudes, Behavior, and professionalism
    Medical faculty UMM emphasize Islamic principles and values as the foundation to shape the graduates’ attitudes, behavior, and professionalism. To enable both professional and personal development, the favorable learning environment is the compulsory. Therefore, all components of doctor education are directed toward systematic and continuous development of thinking, acting, decision-making accordance to Islamic medical ethics.

 

 

  1. Active and Independent Learning
    The ability to learn independently as the basis of life long learning and problem solving skill development should characterize the medical education. Various forms of learning experiences are
    assembled and implemented in such a way to grow and develop this attitude as the principle and the nature of the medical profession.

 

  1. Education in the Community
    Attitudes and professionalism of medical professions are grown and developed through various forms of learning experiences in society such as job training and clinical learning experiences. By that way, the learners are trained to have the opportunity to deliver Islamic values and characters through their profession in the community. Students are expected to perform professional adjustment, to take clinical decisions, and to identify the medical problems occurred in the community using science and sophisticated medical technology,  to select the appropriate medical technology and to utilize various resources and potential capabilities in society.

 

Medical Curriculum

Medical Education is  inseparable academic- profesional education. Consequently, the students of medical education have to attend and complete two stages:  academic program (4 years) and professional education (2 years).

Stage of Academic Program (4 Years)

In academic program students will obtain crucial information on medical science and technology and other related and supporting materials through Problem Based learning (PBL)  and Research Based learning (RBL) either tutorial mode, discussions mode, and practical and laboratory mode.

 

Stage of Professional Education (2Years)

Professional Program is the continuation of academic program where medical students are trained to possess knowledge of clinical learning experiences. The learning process is mostly conducted in Hospital observing and helping the senior doctors tackling patients’ medical problems. This way will give students true experience beneficial for their profession.


All the subject components of academic-professional stage are summarized in competency-based curriculum which complies with the Indonesian Medical Competency Standards authorized by the Indonesian Medical Council. Doctor standards Competency includes:

  1. Effective Communication
  2. Clinical Skills.
  3. Basic Foundation of Medical Science
  4. Health Problem Management
  5. Information Management
  6. Self Retrospection and Self Development
  7. Ethics, Morality, Professionalism and Patient Safety

 

Starting from the 2007/2008 academic year medical education UMM implements Competence-Based Curriculum with 3.5-years period of academic stage and 1.5 of Professional education so that the study time will be completed in 5 years with a degree  doctor (dr).
Medical education UMM is divided into three stages:

 

Stage 1 : (1 semester) focuses on sharpening students’ general and basic knowledge, skills and attitudes .

Stage 2 - 6 semester focuses on the integration of o

 Integrated Education both horizontal and vertical, to achieve the skills to explain and cope with the patient and society problem, including research skills.

Stage 3 (3 semester) focuses on sharpening students’ ability of clinical profession and community medical.
